Rubius and Tomsk Regional Museum of Local Lore are working on an AR theater. There are only three such theaters in the world: in Moscow, New York – and now here, in Tomsk. With this project, the museum won the New Theater competition organized by the Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation and received funding of $20,000 to realize the idea. This year, we will start developing the technical part.
Visitors of the AR theater can watch plays using a special app that adds virtual objects to the stage. These can vary from fantasy scenery, props, or fantastic characters. During the play, actors will interact with them just as if they were actually there, on stage. This brings the performance to a completely new level as theater artists are no longer limited by laws of physics or resources. Imagination is the only limit.
Tomsk AR theater will be located in a special mobile pavilion designed for six spectators and one actor. The first performance to be staged will be 7×7. It consists of 7 short plays that tell a moving story about Siberians, family memory and relics passed down from generation to generation. The premiere of the AR show is set to May 2021.
