Customer
DKC is one of the largest producers of cable support systems and low-voltage equipment in Russia and Europe. The company manufactures 35,000+ different products.
Problem
One of the DKC products is a busbar, a system of distributing electric power using copper or aluminum busbars with suitable enclosures.
At the start of the project, some of the standard element codes are changed to unique ones. These codes describe the geometric parameters of the busbar in a specific project: the positioning of power take-off windows, the length of fitting sections, and others. These unique codes help to identify any non-standard section throughout its life cycle.
Previously, DKC employees manually generated unique codes in Excel. The surge in orders resulted in duplicates and mistakes that were challenging to track. Additionally, there was a need to generate codes for new models of busbars when transferring them from CAD systems, such as Revit. Manual code recording was time-consuming and required constant mistake monitoring.
Solution
Rubius developed a web configurator to generate unique codes for busbar parameters to eliminate their duplication and mistakes. Our analysts studied the code structure requirements and the existing database, identified discrepancies and conflicts. After that, they offered new code structures and algorithms for code generation and duplicate checking.
The application enables users to import a large amount of data from Excel and CAD systems for code generation and transfer the generated codes back to Excel. A direct data import from Autodesk Revit to the configurator is possible based on a special plug-in.
Administrators can track who generated the code and when, and they can manage access rights for users. For example, some users can generate and edit codes, as well as access the general database, while others are limited to viewing.
Configurator features:
- Scenarios for generating and downloading codes
- Data import and export from Excel
- Data import from CAD systems
- Editing codes in the web application
- Automatic distribution of new codes to the registered users
Results
The web application helps administrators generate unique codes and export products 4.5 times faster. Previously, the company generated 1,700 unique codes per month, and now they can produce 7,700 product codes at the same time. The system eliminated errors and duplicates in the code database. All project stakeholders receive the generated codes for non-standard products promptly. This helps to create business proposals faster and accelerates the production itself.
