Engineers often use laser-scanned point clouds as digital models of as-built objects. By comparing point clouds with 3D models, companies can control construction schedule and quality, assess current stage of construction or damage caused by accidents and emergencies.
To compare a point cloud against a design model by hand, engineers have to identify each element of the model in it. This can take up to a week of working time.
